Rob Ballas, 52, was working at the Tucson International Airport when he was injured on May 30, 2011 in a golf cart accident. He was admitted to University Medical Center Tucson as a level one trauma, with injuries including subdural hematoma and intracranial hemorrhage. Once stabilized, Rob was sent to St. Joseph’s Hospital Acute Rehab, where, after surgery, he developed complications including infection. He was transferred to CareMeridian Phoenix on October 13, 2011 for subacute rehab. Rob and his wife Susie lived in Oklahoma at the time of the accident, but once he was transferred to CareMeridian Phoenix, Susie moved to Arizona to keep him at CareMeridian and close to his neurosurgeons at St. Joseph’s.
Upon arrival at CareMeridian, Rob was non-ambulatory, non-verbal and had significant cognitive issues. Thanks to aggressive therapy and Rob’s positive attitude, he is now beginning to walk, helping to put on his ankle-foot orthotic and his cognition is greatly improved as he laughs and converses with family, friends and staff while donning his favorite USC duds in CareMeridian’s gym. He is now functionally using his left arm for dressing and moves his left leg independently for walking with a front-wheeled walker. In addition, he is now able to eat on his own, without the help of a PEG tube. He was rated as a Rancho Level III upon admission and is now at Rancho Level V.
Although Rob continues to have difficulties in memory and orientation, his success story cannot be understated. He had made this journey with the loving support of his dedicated wife Susie, daughter Mary, parents Jack and Sandra, and sisters Linda and Jacquie. And, of course, with the wonderful care he has received while at CareMeridian.
Says wife Susie, “My husband’s story would not be a success without CareMeridian. The staff shows loving concern and support. I don’t have to worry about anything under the direction of the facility’s Director of Nursing and case manager. The entire team has become family to Rob and me. Without a doubt, CareMeridian is the best place for my husband to stay and get well.”
